🧴Rose geranium hydrosol, a plant for dermatological and cosmetic use

Since its import to Europe, rose geranium has been used for both its medical and cosmetic applications.

The brief history of Pelargonium graveolens L'Hér.

Discovered in South Africa and introduced to Europe in the 17th century, the cultivation of rose geranium developed two centuries later. Indeed, at that time, rose essential oil had become very rare and therefore very expensive.

Perfumers then turned to rose geranium, whose foliage has a very similar scent to that of rose, for their perfumes.

The difference between Geranium and Pelargonium

Even today, there is confusion between the genus "geranium" and the genus "pelargonium." This dates back to a small error by Carl von Linné, the great 18th-century naturalist who coined genera and species. In fact, what we commonly call geranium, such as the rose geranium we're discussing today, are actually pelargoniums.

This confusion led to the common use of the name geranium to refer to pelargoniums, which are different from wild species. The latter are used in the production of essential oils and hydrosols.

The different cultivars of Rose Geranium

Pelargonium graveolens L'Hér. includes many cultivars with different chemotypes, depending on their respective biotope:

  • Egyptian Geranium cultivar, cultivated in Egypt (Pelargonium graveolens cv Egypt)
  • Bourbon Geranium cultivar, cultivated in Reunion (Pelargonium graveolens cv Bourbon)
  • Chinese Geranium cultivar, cultivated in China (Pelargonium graveolens cv China)

For perfumers, the Reunion cultivar (cv Bourbon) is the best for its olfactory qualities. If you are lucky enough to visit this French department, you might consider taking the "geranium road" to learn all about this cultivation.
