For millennia, hydrolats and floral waters have been used for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes.

Nature is a wonderful source of benefits and remarkable active ingredients for our well-being and health.

When chosen well, these active ingredients are formidable allies for revitalizing your skin. Today, let's focus on hydrolats and floral waters for cosmetic use 👇🏻

🌿 What is the difference between a hydrolat and a floral water?

When a specific part of a plant is distilled in a still, two final phases are distinguished in the essential oil collector:

  • Essential oil
  • Hydrolat (when the entire plant is distilled) or floral water (when only the flower is distilled)

Hydrolat/floral water is the aqueous phase located beneath the essential oil. The result consists of between 0.05% to 1% essential oil.

Since essential oils are highly diluted within a hydrolat or floral water, they are very interesting to use in cosmetics, especially for children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

The benefits of using organic hydrolats and organic floral waters are numerous:

  • Better skin tolerance;
  • Less risk of toxicity when taken orally;
  • Perfectly tolerated by mucous membranes (mouthwash, eye washes, gynecological use);
  • They present almost no contraindications or drug interactions;
  • They can be safely used in the bath, unlike essential oils which require a particular excipient to be incorporated.

It is thus entirely possible to pour a teaspoon of Roman chamomile hydrolat into baby's bath to promote relaxation and soothe sensitive skin.

Now that we are more attentive to what we apply to our skin, let's learn together how to use hydrolats and floral waters in the best way.

🌟 How to use hydrolats and floral waters in cosmetics?

Hydrolats and floral waters are an essential part of a skincare routine because they have multiple virtues and can be used safely (at physiological doses, of course).

Good to know: a hydrolat or floral water does not necessarily have the same properties as the essential oil derived from the same plant.

They can be used in multiple ways: as a refreshing mist, a mouthwash, orally, or also through olfaction.

Roman Chamomile Hydrolat, for example, is an anti-inflammatory which, when applied topically, will soothe redness, irritation, and skin problems from 3 months of age.

Taken orally, it will also help prevent insomnia or relieve nervous disorders and hyperactivity.

Used correctly, hydrolats and floral waters are therefore very precious allies!

Here are some guidelines:

🔍 Guide to using hydrolats and floral waters according to skin type

🤔 How to store a hydrolat or floral water?

Hydrolats and floral waters can be stored for 12 months away from heat and light. After opening, they should be used within 6 months and, if possible, stored in the refrigerator (the coolness during application will make the treatment even more pleasant!)

💬 For natural homemade cosmetics

If you make your own homemade creams, don't hesitate to replace water with a hydrolat or floral water to further customize your recipe by adding new cosmetic properties.

For a homemade face mask, you can mix clay or plant powder with a hydrolat/floral water and a vegetable oil suited to your skin type.

You can also use our purifying / illuminating exfoliating / soothing masks and regularly spray a hydrolat or floral water on your face.

This will help maintain good hydration of the mask while benefiting from the virtues of the chosen hydrolat or floral water.

For the purifying mask, we recommend clary sage hydrolat.

For the illuminating exfoliating mask, we recommend Italian helichrysum hydrolat.

For the soothing mask, we recommend rose geranium hydrolat

🚥 What skincare routine should you adopt with hydrolats and floral waters?

Start by selecting two hydrolats/floral waters that match your skin type. Two is plenty sufficient: it's better to prioritize quality over quantity!

Do an allergy test in the crook of your elbow before the first application. For example, apply one to two drops of hydrolat or floral water in the crook of your elbow and wait 48 hours. If you observe no skin reaction, then the hydrolat/floral water is suitable for your skin.

Morning routine (2 to 10 minutes):

  1. Using a reusable cotton pad on which I have poured my chosen hydrolat or floral water (for example, cornflower floral water or Italian helichrysum floral water), I remove the impurities from the night (perspiration, ocular secretions, etc.).
  2. On my still slightly damp skin, I apply a vegetable oil (alone or in synergy) to nourish and hydrate my skin. I take the time to massage for a few seconds to activate microcirculation and ensure the oil penetrates well.
  3. I apply makeup (optional).

Evening routine (5 to 10 minutes):

  1. If I've worn makeup, I remove it using a vegetable oil or a bi-phase solution applied to a reusable cotton pad.
  2. I carefully wash my face with water, a bi-phase solution, or a suitable cleansing gel.
  3. I gently pat my skin dry (do not rub, as this may irritate the skin!).
  4. Using a reusable cotton pad on which I have poured my chosen hydrolat or floral water, I remove any lime residue from the water that can dry out my skin.
  5. I apply a vegetable oil (alone or in synergy), a serum, or possibly a night cream.
